Every year the same thing happens. Summer ends, everyone relaxes, and then the last week of September delivers three consecutive days that outdo anything July managed. It isn't bad luck — there's a mechanism behind it, and it explains why the window film calls arrive in autumn rather than midsummer.
Two things line up in the autumn
The first is that offshore flow becomes more common as the season turns. Through the summer the prevailing pattern moves marine air inland, and even here — well away from the coast — that provides some moderation. In autumn the pattern reverses more often, bringing dry air down from the interior with no cooling influence at all.
The second is accumulated heat. By late September the ground, the pavement, and the building stock have absorbed four months of solar energy and are running warm before the day even starts. A hot day in June begins from a cooler baseline than the same day in September does.
The sun angle works against you too
Here's the part that's specific to windows rather than to weather. In midsummer the sun is at its highest, which means it strikes vertical glass at a shallow angle and much of the energy reflects off rather than passing through. Eaves and overhangs also shade south-facing windows most effectively at that time of year.
By late September the sun is lower. It strikes vertical glass closer to perpendicular, so more energy passes through, and it slides in beneath the overhangs that were shading it in June. So a south or west window can genuinely receive more solar energy in September than in July, even before the air temperature is taken into account.
What this means for treating the glass
Practically, it means two things. The first is scheduling: the right time to treat glass is spring, not the week the heat arrives — that's when every installer in the valley has a queue and you wait through the worst of it.
The second is specification. The heat here is unambiguously thermal rather than a glare complaint, which points toward films chosen for infrared rejection. Two visually similar products can differ enormously on that figure, and it's the number that should be at the top of your quote rather than buried in a data sheet.
- Ask for the infrared rejection figure, not just "heat rejection" as a marketing phrase.
- Ask for visible light transmission, so you know how much daylight you're giving up.
- Prioritise west and southwest glass — south glass may already be shaded by eaves for much of the year.
- North-facing windows are rarely worth treating at all.
What film can't fix
Film reduces solar gain through glass and does nothing else. It won't help with heat coming through an uninsulated wall or a hot attic, and it can't compensate for an undersized air conditioner.
In a lot of the post-war housing here, ceiling insulation is original and thin, and that may well be the higher-return upgrade. We'd rather tell you that than sell you film as a whole-house solution. Where film wins outright is on rooms made unusable by direct sun through glass, which insulation doesn't address.
Check what glass you actually have
Many houses here have had windows replaced in one or two rooms, so you may have original single-pane in the front and modern dual-pane at the back. Those take different films, and one blanket specification across both is how a pane ends up cracked.
