Retailers notice fade damage on the day they take something out of a window display and find it doesn't match the stock in the back. Homeowners notice it when a rug moves. Both took years, both are permanent, and both were preventable for a fraction of what the damaged goods cost.
Four causes, and UV is only the largest
Ultraviolet gets blamed for all of it and is behind roughly two fifths. Visible light adds about a quarter, heat another quarter, and the rest comes down to humidity and how stable the dye or finish was to begin with.
That breakdown is how to read film marketing honestly. "Blocks 99% of UV" is entirely true and substantially incomplete — nearly every quality film does it, including completely clear security film. It removes the largest single cause. Getting at the remaining 60% requires a film that also cuts visible light and infrared heat.
Window displays are the worst case
Merchandise in a storefront window receives more direct sun exposure than almost anything else in commercial use, and packaging is often the first thing to go. Printed cartons, labels, and coloured plastics fade far faster than most owners expect, and stock that's been in a display for a season can be visibly different from the same item in the stockroom.
For anything with a printed package or a coloured label this is straightforward inventory loss — the product is fine and unsellable at full price. It's a cost that tends to be absorbed as shrinkage rather than attributed to the window, which is why it goes unaddressed for years.
What's most at risk
Broadly in the order the damage becomes obvious:
- Printed packaging, labels, and coloured plastics in window displays — often visible within a single season.
- Textiles and works on paper, where reds and blues go first.
- Natural hardwood floors, especially anything with an oil finish.
- Luxury vinyl plank and laminate, extremely common in newer fit-outs and homes, which fades unevenly.
- Upholstery and leather, which dry and fade quickly in a hot, sunlit room.
For food and consumables there's an additional consideration beyond appearance: sustained direct sun raises product temperature and light exposure degrades some products independently of how the packaging looks. Anything in a west-facing display is worth reviewing on that basis.
How much film actually helps
A quality film blocks 99% of UV and, depending on the product, a meaningful share of visible light and heat. In practice that typically slows fading by a factor of two to five against untreated glass. Stock that would have been unsellable in one season might last three or four.
It is not zero, and no film makes a display case archival. But it moves fade from a recurring inventory loss to an occasional one, and on a west-facing frontage it usually pays for itself on merchandise alone before the energy saving is counted.
Skylights are the other offender
Overhead glazing takes the sun at the most direct possible angle and concentrates it on whatever sits below. In the plaza units around here that means a hard-edged fade stripe tracking across the floor and across whatever displays sit in its path.
